I rarely post, but I'm hoping to find someone whomaybe has gone thru this and can give me some advise. Ihave 2 herniated discs at L4-L5 & L5-S1 and must've done it months ago by picking up DS cuz I've been in pain for about 7 months.I am scheduled to get epidural injections in 2 weeks, but if that doesn't help with the pain, I am faced with the fact that I'll most likely have to have a microdiscetomy. Just wanted to know if anyone has had a similar experience. I'm terrified at the thought of surgery.
TIA!

My mom had this. Let me know if I can ask her anything for you. The injections did not work for her, so she had disc replacement surgery. She is having a lot of issues because she let the problem get so bad before doing anything about it (many years). Unfortunately she has nerve damage. They are trying to manage her pain. She waited way too long to do anything about it.

I do, just one disc, one of the S's, but I don't remember which! Have you been going to physical therapy? That ended up being the best thing for me and although I still have back pain it's nothing like what it was last summer when it all began. I'm sorry you are going through this, the pain is awful.

me.. I had surgery in 1999. The herniation was at the point where I needed surgery..it had bulged out so much that it had broke off. I wish I didn't need it..but it was a necessity.
I've had issues with my back on and off since then and try to take care of it w/ physical therapy as needed as well as massage / medication. Which doctors are you going to see? I've seen several throughtout NNJ.

Yup... I had a herniated disk and it ruptured while I was on a business trip all the way in Cali. ?Not a good experience for me.?
But, it's rare that they rupture so I don't want to frighten you.
I know a lot of people actually who have had herniated discs. ?Some get better through the shots and through physical therapy. ?And some go on to have surgery. ?I won't sugar coat it - the surgery isn't fun. ?But .... the recovery goes fairly quickly. ?You would be off work for at least 2 weeks, maybe more depending on your recovery. ? Or if you're an at-home mom you will need someone to come in and help you with the housework and with your son. You won't be able to lift him for 2-3 weeks. ?
If you need recs I know a GREAT neurosurgeon in NYC. ?Just let me know. ?
Good luck to you and TAKE IT EASY. ?Every day, simple tasks if not done correctly can make this worse. ?I hope that therapy and time will be all you need. ? Maybe you need some of those Nestie vibes!?
edit: I should add that my surgery was a big success. ?Aside from a couple of pulled muscles I've not had any problems since. ?

Thanks ladies. Liz, yes I'm in my 3rd week of PT and it does help for that day, but by the nextday later I'm right back where I started in terms of pain. I was told by a spinal specialistthat PTprobably won't help me becuase it's been going on for over 6 months. We'll see.. I sure hope the injections help.

I've seen Dr. Cappadonna (ortho) and Dr. Dorsky (spinal specialist) andDr. Lipp(pain mgmt). Do you know any of these drs? Thx!
At least I know I'm not alone - this pain is horrible! Thanks for the vibes.

My DH did when we were in a bad car accident a few years back. He went for physical therapy which helped a lot and goes to a chiro about every 2 weeks for maintainance. I know that some times when the weather is bad his back gets achy.
Surgery and shots were never brought up as a solution but he seems to be fine for the most part.

I have herniated L4 AND L5 with some disc degeneration.......i too carried my niece and it triggered it one day. I went for three epidurals in three months, which only aggrivated the sciatica even more, so for me they made it worse and did not help at all. Though the dr. said surgery was my only option, i opted to go to physical therapy and acupuncture for a while and now i can do the stretches at home.......granted i have had some episodes lasting a few days since, but nothing like the inital months of pain ( i could not even go to work) there are a lot of pros and cons with the surgery, but don't rush into it if you are terrified. Do your research! there are many alternatives to help release the herniation from squishing the nerve! I know how bad the pain can be........feel better!

I have the same herniated discs and am now facing surgery. I was in a car accident in 2001 and then in 2006 and it got worse after that. I have had countless procedures, including the epidurals and they all work, but they are all just temporary. The last time I saw my pain management doctor he said you need surgery, there is nothing more I can do, you have two very bad discs.
I wouldnt jump into surgery if I were you. It doesnt always work which is one thing that is holding me up. I would seek out several opinions, not just one or two. What is working for me is acupuncture, believe it or not. I havent gone in a few weeks and am due to go, but it is so worth it. I think it will help put off surgery for a while.
Let me know if you want my pain mgmt or ortho's names because they are both AWESOME!! Or if you have any other questions email me cookeemnstr at hotmail dot com.

I've had the same issues (herniation) @ L4-L5 and L5-S1, plus pinched nerves. Tried everything under the sun to "fix" it or "alleviate" the issue for 2 years! Finally, with the pain being as unbearable as it is, I caved and had surgery last year. Pain is definitely a lot less than it was before, but comes in waves from time to time esp. doing certain activities, inclement weather related, and when it's cold. All in all, surgery did help.
